Enumclaw High’s soccer season reached the Sweet 16, but went no further.

After clawing their way to the Class 3A state tournament, the Hornets fell 3-2 in Tuesday’s opening round to the Kennewick Lions. Enumclaw trekked across the Cascades for the loser-out contest at Lampson Stadium, home turf for all three high schools in the Kennewick School District.

The Lions hit the scoreboard first, but EHS answered when Evan Absolor scored off a Hogan Olafson assist. That was it for the initial 40 minutes of play.

After halftime, Kennewick wasted little time going up 2-1, then padded its lead with a tally at 73 minutes. Enumclaw’s final goal of the season came with just moments remaining to be played when Caleb Gwerder scored off a Tyler Koenig assist.

The 2013 Hornets finished 10-9 overall and went 5-5 in South Puget Sound League 3A play, placing third.
