Enumclaw tennis: Hornet duo earns No. 6 seed

The Hornet duo earned their way to state grabbing the No. 6 seed out of the West Central District tournament Saturday afternoon at Sprinker Recreation Center in Parkland, Wash.

Redman and Nelson won their first set with Lauren Wetzel and Julie Piboonvarannggon of Columbia River 6-3, but dropped the next two 7-5 and 6-1 in the tournament’s opener May 19. They won three straight games with Auburn Mountainview, Capital and Mount Rainier, all in two sets, Thursday to set up their final match for seeding with Sakura Porter and Anna Quach of Evergreen. The Hornet pair lost for sixth.

EHS teammates Breanna Pierce and Julie Sanders lost to Carly Boyden and Sam Brown of Mount Rainier in the opener. The Enumclaw duo dropped the first set 6-3, rallied to win the second 6-4, then fell the final set 6-4. The EHS pair topped Cassidy Fairchild and Sam Manwell of Port Angeles Thursday before dropping their second contest of the day for an early out.

In singles play, senior Morgan Johnson lost to Haley Zeylmaker of Hazen, 6-2, 6-3 then defeated Nicole Tibi of Olympic, 6-1, 6-4 May 19 to stay alive in for a while in district play. She won her first match Thursday, but dropped the second for an early dismissal.
