Enumclaw water polo team splits league games in opening week of play

The Enumclaw Girls Water Polo team lost one and won one in league play during the opening week of the season, losing to Auburn Mountainview on Tuesday, 18-2, and beating Auburn on Thursday, 14-5.

The Enumclaw girls water polo team lost one and won one in league play during the opening week of the season, losing to Auburn Mountainview on Tuesday, 18-2, and beating Auburn on Thursday, 14-5.  The Hornets also lost a non-league game to Puyallup on Friday, 10-8.

The young Hornet squad – with one senior, one junior, three sophomores, and seven freshmen on the roster – were outgunned by the veteran Mountainview team on Tuesday. Savanna Warner scored eight and Avalon Lanz scored six for the Lions.  Bailey Sexton and Hayley Sonneson each scored one for the Hornets.

The Hornets responded with a 14-5 win over Auburn on Thursday. Bailey Sexton led all scorers with eight goals, Bella Davenport knocked in three, Sonneson scored two, and Woodall added one.  Goalkeeper Megan Lesmeister had 14 saves.

On Friday the Hornets traveled to Puyallup for a non-league game against the Vikings and suffered a narrow 10-8 loss.

Puyallup took off to a 3-0 lead in the first half of the opening quarter, but the Hornets rallied to score two goals in the final 26 seconds of the quarter, to trail by one, 3-2, going into the second quarter.  Enumclaw outscored Puyallup in the second quarter for a 7-6 Enumclaw lead at halftime.  The Vikings caught up with Enumclaw for an 8-8 tie after three quarters, and Puyallup held the Hornets scoreless in the final quarter for the 10-8 final score.

Sophomore Hayley Sonneson scored four for Enumclaw, and Bailey Sexton and Bella Davenport each scored two.

Enumclaw travels to Auburn on Tuesday for a league game against Auburn Riverside.
