Erickson leads state golf tournament

After the first day of play, Enumclaw High's Jake Erickson leads the boys Class 3A state golf tournament with an even-par 72.

Enumclaw High’s Jake Erickson finished the first round of play at the Class 3A state boys golf tournament Wednesday at Meadow Springs Country Club in Richland, Wash., tied for first with Daniel Snoey of Camas with an even-par 72.

Hornet teammates Tyler Salsbury and Jordan Beals were six strokes back at 78, but both made the second-day cut. The top 40 golfers plus ties will tee off Thursday morning for the final 18 holes.

White River High’s Casey Zimmer, who slipped into the tournament as a late entry, did not qualify for the second-day of competition.

On the girls side of the state tournament at Horn Rapids Golf Course in Richland, Enumclaw High’s Mara Koplitz and Kelly Sweeney were sitting in 13th after finishing in a six-way tie at 82 strokes. Katrina Hegge of Seattle Prep was leading with a 5-under 67. Last year’s medalist Kristin Tan of Holy Names was fourth at 76.

Hornet Tory Schreiner made the second day of competition, shooting an 88 for 30th. Teammate Kaylee Salsbury and Bonney Lake’s Alex Ellis, Tracy Hare and Courtney Bartlett did not make the cut to play Thursday.
