A swarm of White River High Hornets trekked across the mountains for Saturday’s Pasco Invitational.

Twenty track and field athletes had qualified for the big meet but, due to illness and injury, only a dozen or so performed.

The biggest splash was made by Hornet senior Marcus Dickson, who won the mile with a time of 4 minutes, 9.10 seconds. After his time was converted to a 1,600-meter distance, he had rewritten the stadium record book.

Also noteworthy were personal-best performances turned in by Scott Anderson in the javelin; Jade Crawford in both the high jump and 100-meter hurdles; and Kody Gould in the 3,200 meters.

Thursday afternoon, the Hornets  – both the boys and girls squads – had rolled to victories when they hosted Franklin Pierce and Eatonville in double-dual South Puget Sound League 2A action.

The White River boys defeated Franklin Pierce 78-66 and whipped the Cruisers 89-56.

Event winners were Dickson in both the 400 and 1,600 meters; Gould in the 800; Chris Fisher, 3,200 meters; Blake Maresh, shot put; and Sonny Frye, pole vault.

The Hornet girls beat Franklin Pierce 64-43 and took Eatonville 64-45.

Winning events were Lauryn Wate in the 800 and 3,200 meters; Crawford, 100-meter hurdles and high jump; Cassidy France, 100 meters and 3000-meter hurdles; Cassidy Kunst, long jump; Maddy Budinich, triple jump; and Kelly Coyle, pole vault. The Hornet girls also won the 4×100 and 4×200 relays.

The Hornets traveled Tuesday for the Federal Way Invitational and will not compete again until April 26 when they host the Sumner Spartans.
