Wrestlers from both White River and Enumclaw motored down I-5 last weekend to Portland, where they participated in the fifth annual Rose City Championships.
One of the Northwest’s premier events for high school grapplers, the December 12-13 tournament attracted 615 wrestlers who combined for 1,188 matches and eventually crowned 14 individual champions.
In a field of 38 teams the White River boys placed 11th and Enumclaw landed in 28th place. Here’s a rundown of the Plateau athletes.
WHITE RIVER
The Buckley squad was paced by Gaige Cartwright who placed sixth at 106 pounds. He wrestled eight times, winning four by fall and one by technical fall. Dallas Stryker Simmons also had a notable weekend, winning five of his seven matches including four by fall.
Other White River wrestlers who added significant points to the team total included: Joshua Wilson at 126 pounds, who won four of his six matches; Joshua Hanson, 157, who registered two pins, a technical fall and a major decision; and Jaxon Rodarte, 175, who pinned four of his six opponents. Earning three victories each were Laedyn Mills, 113; Morgan Presley, 132; Brayden Thacker, 144; and Rohnon Cummings, 150.
ENUMCLAW
The top scorers for Enumclaw High were Eddie Cormier-Higgins at 150 pounds, who had three victories, all by fall; Easton Bylin at 144, four victories; Bo Bruhn at 157, who won by a fall and two technical falls; and Gaven Gemmell at 106, who had a pin and a major decision.
