The Enumclaw High baseball squad kept its firm hold on second place in the South Puget Sound League 3A last week, winning two of three games to elevate its league mark to 8-2.

The Hornets took a 10-3 victory April 15 over the Sumner Spartans, as senior southpaw Andrew Olson battled early pitching control problems, issuing six free passes, but came back to go the distance and finish strong, recording a dozen strikeouts.

Thursday, the Hornets blew an opportunity to tie Auburn Mountainview in the league standings as they fell behind early 4-1 in the bottom of the third frame against good pitching by the Lions’ Cody Hebner, and lost 6-1 on Osborne Field.

“The good news is that we will get another shot at Auburn Mountainview at their place 7 p.m. this Friday night,” Enumclaw skipper Eric Fiedler said.

Fiedler was proud of the way his crew shook off the loss to the Lions and avenged its only other league defeat, beating Bonney Lake on the Panthers’ diamond Saturday by the score of 11-5.

“All around, I would say the win against Bonney Lake was one of the best games we’ve played all season,” Fiedler said.

In three games, Berent Hagen emerged as one of the Hornets’ more consistent hitters, going 6-for-10 from the dish with eight runs batted in and a double.

Enumclaw traveled to Peninsula Tuesday, with the results coming too late to report here, and will face the 0-9 Clover Park Warriors at 7 tonight, Wednesday, at Osborne Field. Friday, as the Hornets go on the road to tangle with league-leading Auburn Mountainview at 7 p.m., there will be a school-to-school tailgate function prior to the game, apparently to mend some earlier misunderstandings between the two schools.
