Key returns, and losses, for EHS fall sports teams

Girls soccer and boys tennis are off to a good start.

The Enumclaw High sports calendar hits its stride this week, with all fall programs seeing action. The following is a peek at the season’s EHS teams, with the exception of football which was previewed last edition.

GIRLS SOCCER

Early-season action: Enumclaw opened the season with a nonleague match, defeating Bonney Lake High 2-0 on Sept. 5. The Hornets received goals by Bristal Markus and Sutton Kelsey, while Kami Bullock registered a shutout in goal. The EHS squad was at Kentlake Sept. 8 and is home vs. Decatur Sept. 10 at Enumclaw Expo Center at 7 p.m.

Key returnees: Senior captains Sutton Kelsey and Clare Largent.

Promising freshmen: Sadie Barrier, Camryn Puryear, Brooke Flatness and Annena Rolon.

Key losses: Emma Henshaw (NPSL 3A Defensive Player of the Year last year), Ruthie Landwehr, Megan Madill, Reese Darby, Ally Mavin.

From coach Shaun Tobius: “My expectations for the season are to compete in every facet of the game and to outwork our opponents.”

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Early-season action: Timberline Two-Mile Jamboree, Sept. 5; EHS and Kent-Meridian at Decatur, Sept. 17; 44th Annual Woodbridge Classic, Sept. 19-20; EHS and Todd Beamer at Thomas Jefferson, Sept. 24.

Key returnees: seniors Ellis Behrens and Spencer Ballard; juniors Elliott Cheney (second team all-league a year ago), Melvin Johnson and Jack Blair; and sophomore Reagan Palmer.

Top newcomers: junior Caleb Massey and freshman Liam Harding.

From coaches Curtis and Rebekah Cheney: “Our district will have eight qualifying teams to state this fall. We have high hopes for both the girls and boys programs to qualify for state.”

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Early-season action: Timberline Two-Mile Jamboree, Sept. 5; EHS and Kent-Meridian at Decatur, Sept. 17; 44th Annual Woodbridge Classic, Sept. 19-20; EHS and Todd Beamer at Thomas Jefferson, Sept. 24.

Key returnees: seniors Lily Haas (first team all-league last year) and Sydney Poe; juniors Bella Pohlman, Stella Grant and Avery Marecle; and sophomore Emily Haas.

Top newcomer: Autumn Vogel, junior.

BOYS TENNIS

Early-season action: EHS opened the season with a home, nonleague match against Steilacoom on Sept. 4. The Hornets won 5-0, getting victories from Eli Macy in No. 1 singles and Levi Nelson in No. 2 singles. In doubles play, EHS victories came from King Gisa/William Stuenkel at No. 1, Tallen Warren/Asher Johnson at No. 2 and Nick Harris/Hudson Kelsey at No. 3. The Hornets took on Decatur on Sept. 9 and will face Kent-Meridian on Sept. 11.

Key returnees: King Gisa, senior, and William Stuenkle, sophomore, 3A NPSL Doubles Team of the Year in 2024; Eli Macy, junior (first team all-league singles last year).

Coach: Will Stuenkel.

BOYS GOLF

Early-season action: EHS hosts Decatur High on Sept. 9 and Federal Way High on Sept. 11, both beginning at 3 p.m. at Enumclaw Golf Course.

Key returnees: Travis Leonard, senior (first team all-league last year); Wyatt Webb, junior (first team all-league last year); Parker Cook, senior (second team all-league last year); Cole Kiblinger, senior (second team all-league last year).

From coach Ryan Picinich: “The Enumclaw boys golf team is a special group,” the coach reported. “We bring back five seniors and a junior that all have valuable league tournament experience as well as spring tournament experience. They play a lot of golf and most importantly, they get along and enjoy being together. Senior Travis Leonard and junior Wyatt Webb have been our most consistent scorers followed by seniors Parker Cook, Cole Kiblinger and Henry Bort. Our returning sophomores are Sawyer Mowbray, Max Craighead and Willis Watterson. Each of these players, along with sophomore Charlie Stone and freshman Owen Johnson, could make a run at the league tournament this year. I hope our guys will soak up the opportunities to play together, compete and represent both our school and golf community.”

GIRLS GOLF

Early-season action: EHS faces Decatur High Sept. 9 at Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club and Federal Way High on Sept. 11 at North Shore Golf Course, both at 3:15 p.m.

Key returnee: Taylor Puryear, senior (first team all-league last year).

VOLLEYBALL

Early-season action: EHS hosts Auburn Mountainview Sept. 8, hosts Decatur High Sept. 9 and hosts Bethel High Sept. 11, all at 7:15 p.m. in Chuck Smith Gymnasium.

Key returnees: seniors Haley Dumontet (first team all-league last year) and Ava Smith (second team all-league).

Key losses: Haley Osborne and Jayden Coffee.

Last year: Enumclaw finished with an overall record of 14-5. In league play the squad went 13-3, good for second place. The Hornets advanced to the District 3/4 tournament but fell short of landing a state berth.

Coach: Barbie Becker (second season).

GIRLS SWIM/DIVE

Early-season action: EHS hosts Auburn Mountainview and White River on Sept. 11 at 3:30 p.m. at the Enumclaw Aquatic Center and takes on Decatur High Sept. 18 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

Key returnees: Audrie Roddy, junior (500 freestyle, first team all-league last year and 200 freestyle, second team); Alexandra Levesh, senior (100 butterfly, first team all-league last year) and 100 breaststroke, second team).

Key loss: Jay Massey (100 backstroke, second team all-league last year).
