Local SPSL 2A boys to fight hoop battle for 2nd place in Buckley

The rapidly approaching boys basketball rendezvous between Sumner and White River this Tuesday evening commencing 5:15 p.m. at The Hive will feature a pair of skilled squads with identical 5-1 marks in league action.

Something has got to give when these two roundball monsters collide in Buckley Jan. 10 and when the dust settles after the confrontation, one of the squads will have dropped to a third place status in this fiercely competitive league.

Most recently, Sumner got right back up on its horse after trekking to Clover Park Warrior territory Tuesday, Jan. 3 and sustaining its initial league setback of the year to the Class 2A defending state champion. The purple and gold hosted Steilacoom Friday evening, Jan. 6 and got a combined 38 points out of Joey Kendall and Dave DeVries. Also Steilacoom could never get untracked offensively against a stingy Sumner defense that put the clamps on the Sentinels to manage at 26-13 advantage at intermission.

Meanwhile White River returned to its winning ways when it made the bus excursion to Fife’s gym Friday and backhanded the hosting Trojans 66-38, behind a 26-point performance from senior backcourt ace Billy Kiel, who seems to have regained his shooting eye, going into the huge clash with the Sparts two days from now.
