White River wrestling coach Joe Klein was beaming Saturday night. Not only did his boys team put five wrestlers into the state tournament, but so did the Hornets’ girls team. Plus, the Lady Hornets carried home a fourth-place finish from the regional tournament Saturday at Emerald Ridge, finishing one point behind Enumclaw with host Emerald Ridge and Rogers tying for the title.

The Sumner Spartans’ seniors made sure a disappointing basketball season ended on a high note. They scored 22 points in the final period for a 58-59 win over their district rivals, the Bonney Lake Panthers, in South Puget Sound League 3A play Feb. 13 at home.
In their final game of the season, the Sumner High girls fought for every rebound and loose ball against the playoff-bound Bonney Lake Panthers.
Jenny Paterson, Chantelle Bailey, Rose Johnson and Breanna Flaquinti are already making history as part of the first girls wrestling team to represent Enumclaw High at Mat Classic, the state wrestling tournament Friday and Saturday, but they’re not finished yet. The quartet hope to bring home some hardware for the trophy case as well.
The Enumclaw High girls completed the South Puget Sound League 3A portion of their schedule with an 11-5 record, good for third place and a Friday night date in the opening round of the subdistrict basketball tournament.
The wonderful element for the Enumclaw High boys basketball squad – fresh from its coronation as South Puget Sound League 3A basketball champion – is that Friday’s encounter with Renton High is for seeding purposes alone.
The Bonney Lake High boys failed to put a mark in the South Puget Sound League 3A basketball victory column. The Panthers lost a hard-fought battle to their district rivals, as the Sumner Spartans pulled out a 58-50 win Feb. 13 in Sumner.
Bonney Lake High’s Marcel Pounds tossed in a game-high 27 points – including five 3-pointers – to help the Panthers clinch the No. 2 spot in the South Puget Sound League 3A with a 59-42 win over the Sumner Spartans Friday in Sumner.
The Sumner High wrestling squad took three wrestlers to Saturday’s West Central District regional tournament, staged just up Elhi Hill at Bonney Lake High School, and when the dust cleared, lanky senior 125-pounder Tyler Wooding and 215-pound senior bruiser Keiffer Comstock had earned appointments at this weekend’s Class 3A state wrestling tournament at the Tacoma Dome.
Eight gymnasts from the Sumner School District – five Spartans and three Panthers – will compete this week in the Class 3A state meet in the Tacoma Dome.
Enumclaw High will lead the charge with two individuals and two relay teams into Friday and Saturday’s Class 3A state swim championships at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. Preliminaries begin at 5:45 p.m. with finals slated for Saturday evening.
