Two out of three wins isn’t bad, especially since the Enumclaw High girls water polo didn’t get to play the third match. The Hornets defeated Rogers 11-7 and Bonney Lake 17-8 while its contest against Auburn was postponed due to equipment failure at the Auburn pool. That game has been tentatively rescheduled for 5:30 p.m. May 2.

The Hornets are in second place in the East Division of the South Sound Girls Water Polo League with a 6-2 league record, 11-2 overall. The Hornets take some time off until 10 a.m. Saturday when they head to Gig Harbor High.

After the team’s disappointing April 14 game cancellation, Enumclaw bounced back to beat Rogers April 15 in a nonleague contest.

The Hornets scored on their first possession, a goal from center Kaitlyn Korsch. Rogers tied the game one less than a minute later, but the EHS scored again to end the first period with a 2-1 lead.

The second quarter was all Enumclaw, with the Hornets scoring six goals, while holding the Rams scoreless until the final 19 seconds of the half. At halftime, Enumclaw was up 8-2.

Rogers made a run during the third period, scoring five goals, but Enumclaw held the Rams scoreless in the final quarter to hang on to the win.

Breanna Flaquinti led EHS in scoring with four goals. Lindsay Bowden knocked in three, Erin Stucker scored two and Korsch and Brooke Flaquinti each scored a goal. Shaye Hogerhuis had another outstanding game in goal with 16 saves, including two stops on penalty shots.

Friday, the Hornets improved their league record with the home win over Bonney Lake.

Nineteen Hornets saw action in the game; eight scored, while 13 had attempts. Scoring for Enumclaw were Stucker with four goals, Bowden and Brooke Flaquinti with three each, Korsch and Tianna Hogan with two each, and Breanna Flaquinti, Annie Birklid and Alina Van Ruff with one apiece.

The Hornet defense was also in high gear, with 12 players intercepting passes. Bowden collected five steals, Ali Ballard, Brooke Flaquinti, Angie Brazier, Kelsey Brazier and Birklid each had two, and Korsch, Logann Erskine, Breanna Flaquinti, Rachel Deonigi, Kelsey Sonneson and Hogan each had a steal. Hogerhuis grabbed eight saves and three assists in first-half of play in the goal, while backup keeper Rose Johnson gathered seven saves in the second half.

For Bonney Lake, Alex Ellis scored three, Kirsty Moore scored two and Jasmine Eliason, Courtney Fisher, and Ashley Alvarez each scored one.
