The Bonney Lake High girls hit the basketball court running last week winning two nonleague games to start the season.

Bonney Lake beat Timberline 63-61 Friday at home and handled North Thurston 66-54 Dec. 2 on the road.

Marcel Pounds led the offensive numbers in both games with 31 points against Timberline and 33 at North Thurston.

“She has a really quick release,” coach Tom Ostrander said.

“We run sets to get her some shots and she gets it off even if there is a hand in her face. She is shooting really well.”

Against Timberline, Pounds hit four 3-point shots and was eight-for-12 from two-point range. Pounds dropped in six 3-pointers at North Thurston.

The Timberline game featured tough defense with two of the Panthers’ top stoppers, Rachel Wiegand and Carli Elwin, fouling out in the fourth.

“The girls really battled,” Ostrander said. “It’s huge to win a close game like this early in the season.”

Rochelle Murray scored 10 points from her point guard spot.

Bonney Lake played Enumclaw Tuesday at home in the first South Puget Sound League 3A action of the season for the team. Scores were not available.

The Panthers will travel to Peninsula for a 7 p.m. game Friday.
