Sumner High’s girls cross country unit finished 12th during Saturday’s Class 2A state meet, staged on a challenging 3.1-mile course at Pasco’s Sun Willows Golf Course.
The lone Spartan boy to make the state trip was Coltin Tanner, who returned to the state scene as he promised his coach, Kristin Martin, finishing 99th overall with a time of 17 minutes, 29 seconds.
Sun Willows is a hilly and demanding course, not known for producing memorable times, but according to Martin the SHS girls booked some decent times.
“Four of our girls PRed (set a personal record) and one hit her season best time,” Martin said. “Additionally, the top five runners finished at under 22 minutes.”
The first Spartan girl to complete the course was Gabby Phelps, who crossed the finish line in 29th, shaving a minute off last year’s state time with a clocking of 19:46.
Following Phelps were sophomore Abi Hensler in 50th at 20:16, Natasha Wilson in 98th, 21:24; Robi Long, 101st, 21:16; and Amanda Riley, 112th, 21:52.
