When the Sumner Spartan cross country squad competed at Saturday’s subdistrict meet at Fort Steilacoom Park, it lit up the competition for the most part and was very consistent.

The way the 2A phase of the sub-=district meet is set up, the top eight teams and the top 40 individuals moved on to Saturday’s state-qualifying round at American Lake Golf Course in Lakewood, where the top five teams and top 25 individuals will qualify for participation at the state meet at Pasco’s Sun Willows Golf Course in early November.

Both the SHS male and female factions will be advancing to American Lake as the boys finished fifth overall and the girls finished third.

Both had productive afternoons as sophomore Abi Hensler and senior Gabby Phelps crossed the finish line of the damp course in 12th and 14th places with times of 20 minutes, 44.9 seconds and 21:11.03. This tandem was followed by Natasha Wilson, 22nd, 21:47.3; Robi Long, 25th, 22:07.3; Amanda Riley, 34th, 22:51; and Allie Sims, 42nd, 23:46.1.

On the boy’s side, it was much the same success story only to a little less extent as Coltin Tanner and Cory Brandt finished 14th and 24th overall with clockings of 17:11 and 17:24. Behind them were Arturo Perez, 34th, 18:04.9; Reid Selmer, 42nd, 18:20.3; Shaun LaVigne, 46th, 18:35.6; and Josh Goodsell, 52nd, 19:06.4.

Sumner’s girls wound up claiming the SPSL 2A crown for the second straight year going 12-0 and also earned the prestigious sportsmanship award. The boys finished second in the SPSL 2A, trailing only White River, with a mark of 10-2.
