SHS FOOTBALL: Spartans lose early lead against Cardinals by half-time

Running back Tyler Salisbury got the Sumner High football team on the board in the opening quarter and receiver Dan DeVries and quarterback Aaron Clark combined for a touchdown in the second quarter to keep it close at the half Friday night, but after that it was all Franklin Pierce.

Running back Tyler Salisbury got the Sumner High football team on the board in the opening quarter and receiver Dan DeVries and quarterback Aaron Clark combined for a touchdown in the second quarter to keep it close at the half Friday night, but after that it was all Franklin Pierce.

The Spartans, who rushed for 100 first-half yards, were controlling the game until just before halftime when the Cardinals picked off a Clark pass and sprinted 71 yards into the end zone for the 14-12 lead.

The Cardinals scored 28 unanswered points for a 42-12 SPSL 2A victory.

“It was the tale of two halves,” coach Keith Ross said. “We played fantastic in the first half.”

The difference for the Spartans was injuries. Sumner’s formidable backfield of Salisbury and Lokahi Kamau watched from the sidelines. Both left the game with concussions. Clark also went out with a separated shoulder. He made a valiant effort to return as a single-caller, but without his passing attack.

Monday morning, Ross was not sure if the three will be available for Friday night’s contest with Eatonville.

The Spartans fell to 1-3 in league play and will travel to Eatonville to face the 1-3 Cruisers at 7 p.m.
