SHS FOOTBALL: Spartans pick up season’s first win over Auburn Mountainview

It wasn’t pretty, but it was a win.

It wasn’t pretty, but it was a win.

Sumner High got its first win of the season Friday with a 21-0 shutout of Auburn Mountainview to celebrate homecoming at Sunset Chev Stadium.

An hour before the game until halftime, heavy rains prevailed.

But the Spartans managed two touchdowns in the first quarter for a 14-0 margin in the South Puget Sound League 3A contest.

“We don’t ever expect to win pretty,” Sumner head coach Keith Ross said. “We’re kind of a grind-it-out, play defense team. I was nice to see the kids play well, have fun and get a win.”

On Auburn Mountainview’s first possession, a high snap sailed over the punter’s head and Zach Williams scooped up the loose ball and ran 20 yards for the first TD just 86 seconds into the game.

Zach Bowers added the point-after kick – his first of a perfect 3-for-3 on the night.

On the Lions’ next series, they fumbled the ball at the Sumner 43 with less than nine minutes left in the first half. Driving downfield in the pouring rain, quarterback Aaron Clark connected with Forrest Beattie on two catches and Williams on another.

The drive was capped by Clark’s 11-yard run for a 14-0 margin with 4:38 left to go.

Penalties hampered the Lions in the first quarter. They were flagged five times.

The Spartan defense, led by Cody Haavik, Ben Taua, Alex Bricker and Alex Griffith, didn’t allow the Auburn Mountainview inside the Sumner 20-yard line the entire game.

“With their quarterback out, who I think is one of the best players in the league, we stacked the box and contained their other players,” Ross said.

Sumner’s final TD was by Tyler Salsbury who split the Lions defense for a 58-yard run on the second play of the fourth quarter.

Austin McRae’s interception halted a Lion drive with less than seven minutes left to play.

“We’re young and we’re getting better ever week,” Ross said. “They need to get a win to see the fruit of their labor and I’m proud of them.”
