SHS GIRLS BASKETBAL: Lady Spartans charge ahead

Neither of last week’s South Puget Sound League 2A opponents, Franklin Pierce or Fife, put up much of a tussle as the Sumner High girls sailed to 57-41 and 63-44 victories, respectively.

Neither of last week’s South Puget Sound League 2A opponents, Franklin Pierce or Fife, put up much of a tussle as the Sumner High girls sailed to 57-41 and 63-44 victories, respectively.

Sumner blew the feathers off the Cardinals with a 34-point second half rally after trailing by one at intermission when the teams met Jan. 25. Spartan senior point guard Angie Sanchez led the rallying charge in the third and fourth periods as she tabulated 19 points in the road triumph.

Upon returning to the friendly confines of the Spartan fortress Friday, the Spartans didn’t disappoint their followers, darting to a 34-14 lead at halftime. The final outcome was never really in doubt even though Fife did find a little more success in the third and fourth frames, outshining Sumner 30-29.

As Fife was able to match up pretty well size-wise in the paint with the fairly large SHS girls, the Spartan guards did most of the damage with long range bombing attacks outside the perimeter. Sumner’s tandem of Sanchez and Erika Olsen scored 14 and 16 points, respectively.

This week, Sumner’s dance card is moderately challenging as 3-6 Washington High visited Tuesday and the Spartans travel to 5-6 Clover Park Friday.

All this gears up for a Tuesday rematch between first place White River and second place Sumner.
