Sumner High’s girls basketball squad watched its South Puget Sound League 3A mark slip to 10-4 when it traveled to Lakes High Feb. 2 and lost 54-48 to a Lancer group it had beaten only a month ago.

Sumner salvaged a home court 45-31 victory Thursday over a woeful Franklin Pierce club that has only managed to claim two conquests this season, both coming against the winless Clover Park Warriors.

The Spartans put together a balanced scoring attack against Franklin Pierce, as Tyeanne Lubking, Erika Olsen, Kaitlin King and Ashley Delaney combined to account for 35 of the Spartans’ 45 total points.

This could bode well for the critical contests Sumner has on tap this week.

Sumner traveled to White River Tuesday night to go up against a stirred up hive, ready to sting the nearest available prey after losing Thursday at Bonney Lake. Results came too late to report here but will be posted at www.courierherald.com.

At 7 p.m. Friday, Sumner’s girls will host a rested and ready 12-3 Bonney Lake squad that enjoyed an evening off with a bye Tuesday. The last time these two teams did basketball battle was in Bonney Lake’s digs and the Panthers gobbled up the Spartans 76-41.

Bonney Lake boasts the SPSL 3A’s top scorer in Marcel Pounds, who coming into this week was averaging 21 points per outing.

This game for Sumner will be all about district bragging rights and maintaining their likely third, fourth or fifth spot in the fast and furious race for the existing five SPSL 3A playoff seeds. Coming into this week Auburn Mountainview and Lakes were sitting at 10-5 and 9-5 in the league standings, respectively.
