SHS TENNIS: Henken and Anderson rally to break tie in doubles match

Sumner High’s Taylor Henken and Kyla Anderson rallied from a 5-2 setback to force a 7-6 tiebreaker against Karley Crawford and Helen Petersen of Prosser in their second match of the 2A state girls tennis tournament Friday at the University of Washington.

Henken, a senior, and Anderson, a junior, dropped the second set 6-2 for a first day exit. They lost their opener 6-3, 6-2 to Emily Barclift  and Mckenzie Click of Tumwater.

“This match was by far one of the best that I have seen our girls play,” Spartan assistant coach Spenser Phelan said. “And we were all very proud of their performance.”

The Spartan pair were first-team, all-league selections. Sophomore teammate Jasmine Babcock was an all-league honorable mention. Sumner is still waiting a verdict from league administrators on whether they will be awarded the league title. With a number of matches unable to be played due to weather, the league officials opted to not award a league crown this season. Sumner coach Chris Heacox is trying to get them to change their mind and award a co-championship to his Spartans and the two teams that could have potentially tied them if all matches were played.
