SHS TRACK AND FIELD: Layton takes gold in 800-yard dash

Members of the Sumner High track and field squad took full advantage of one last tune-up Saturday, before getting down to the business of postseason competition.

A bevy of these Spartan athletes competed in the Tacoma Challenge at Lincoln Bowl, with both the boys and girls  teams placing fifth in a field of eight.

The SHS boys fared best in the 800-meter run, with Jobe Layton taking first place at 2 minutes, 8.35 seconds, and Cody Brandt finishing second at 2:09.20. Brandt also finished third in the 1,600 meters. Michael Smith won the pole vault competition.

For the Sumner girls, Trulson won the pole vault by catapulting herself 10 feet, 3 inches, and Abi Hensler won the 3,200 meters at 12:40.8.

Thursday, Sumner hosted White River at Sunset Chev Stadium. While the Buckley boys stung the Sparts 101-40, the girls breezed past the visiting contingent 86-64.

Spartan Lauren Bulzomi won the 400 meter dash and Hensler was tops in the 3,200 meters at 12:56.1.

The Spartan ladies dominated in the both relay events as the SHS team of Amber Look, Lindsay Daigle, Meghan Hilden and Rachel Fox won the 4×100 race and DeDominces, Bulzomi, Fecteau and Natasha Wilson were tops in the 4×400.

In the field events, Sumner seniors Katrina Carter, discus, Leah Engelhardt, long jump, and Carhahan, shot put, all took firsts, as did Trulson in the pole vault. Fecteau won the triple jump with a leap of 32 feet, 8 inches.

On the boys side of things, Ryan Finneran claimed first in the long jump, 17-6, the high jump, 5-0, and the triple jump 38-4 inches.

Sean Dorfler muscled his way to gold when he spun the discus 120-3.

Bateman won the javelin event with a throw of 136-2.
