The Sumner High boys and girls track and field team will be advancing a dozen members to regionals after they qualified at the Class 2A subdistrict meet at Sumner’s Sunset Chev Stadium Friday and Saturday.
The only Spartan first-place finisher was Neil Bateman, who threw the javelin 167 feet, 7 inches.
Other Spartan boys advancing were pole vaulters Jonoah Lentz and Michael Smith, who finished second and third with vaults of 12-6 and 11-0.
Coltin Tanner crossed the finish line in the 3,200 meters in fourth place at 10 minutes, 37.86 seconds, to advance to Saturday’s district action, again at Sunset Chev Stadium.
There was a definite Sumner High girls presence as many will be moving on to bigger things.
In the 4×400 relay, the Spartan girls finished second with a time of 4:27.82. Included in the foursome were Leah DeDominces, Gabby DeGoede, Gabby Phelps and Zoe Conrad.
Sumner’s girls also took silver in the 4×200 relay, sailing to a time of 1:53.02 with the help of Lauren Bulzomi, Meagan Bodus, Natasha Wilson and Leia Fecteau.
Kaylie Rozell flew to a third place in the 100-meter hurdles, while McKenna Woodworth and Sierra Tinsley qualified for regionals by finishing fourth and sixth, respectively. In the 300-meter hurdles Woodworth flashed to a second place finish and Rozell was right behind her in third.
DeGoede will be moving on to regional action by virtue of her fourth-place finish in the 800 meters, in which she recorded a time of 2:31.37. Joining her at regionals will be Abi Hensler and DeGoede who were among the top six finishers in the 1,600-meter run. Hensler finished the race with a clocking of 5:41.06.
Veronica Carnahan not only finished second in the shot put, but also was fifth in the discus. Sumner also had a tandem of placers in the triple jump competition in fifth place winner Leah Engelhardt and second place Fecteau, who also placed fourth in the long jump finals, sailing to a distance of 14-8.75.
Making cameos in the regional competition in the high jump will be Tinsley and Kaitlyn Neary, who finished fourth and fifth.
Pole vaulters Michaela Trulson and Samantha Andrada will be making the regional scene as both finished with vaults of more than 9 feet to wind up in the top handful of placers.
