Sumner High’s wrestlers raised some eyebrows at the South Puget Sound League 2A subregional tournament Friday and Saturday at White River High.

At 103 pounds, Spartan Travis Filleau was the top finisher for Sumner as he got all the way to the championship bout before having to settle for second place.

The SHS freshman lost a 5-2 decision to Toan Nguy-Gen of Washington.

Other Sumner wrestlers who will be joining Filleau at Saturday’s Region 3 2A tournament are senior, 152-pounder Matthew Wilson, who wound up in third; Spartan captain Tyler Hidalgo, fourth in the 145-pound weight division; Markus Forhan, fourth at 125; and Nick Ehrenheim, fourth at 189 pounds.

Saturday’s regional wrestling tournament at Franklin Pierce will feature grapplers from the SPSL 2A and the Olympic League, all fighting for the top four spots which qualify them for a state tournament berth.

Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
