Six Plateau youths are hoop shoot champs | Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship

Two boys and two girls from the Plateau area, ages 12 to 14, were named regional champions of the 2012 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship March 10 in competition in Burien, Wash. With the win, they have earned the right to compete at the state level on March 24 in Yakima.

Two boys and two girls from the Plateau area, ages 12 to 14, were named regional champions of the 2012 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship March 10 in competition in Burien, Wash. With the win, they have earned the right to compete at the state level on March 24 in Yakima.

Sacred Heart Council 13364 in Enumclaw, together with other councils in Region 3, sponsored the free-throw event. All those competing were previous winners at the local and district levels. The local event took place Jan. 29 at Southwood Elementary School.

Those competing from Enumclaw did exceptionally well by winning their division in four of the 10 age groups. Winner in the girls’ 12-year-old division was Jessica Cerne and the winner of the girls’ 13-year-old division was Sydney Andersen. The boys winners were Drew Seabrands, 13, and Blake McBroom, 14. Andersen, Seabrands and McBroom all were good on 21 of 25 attempts in the competition.

Each winner was presented with a certificate and a trophy and invited to compete in Yakima, were the winners will receive trophies and will be entered into judging where the international champion is selected.

The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district and state competitions.

International champions are announced by the Knights of Columbus International headquarters based on scores from the state-level competitions.
