It was a busy week for the girls on the Bonney Lake High tennis team – and a good week, with the team winning two of three matches, including a victory over district rival Sumner.

The week began for the Panthers with a tight 3-2 win over the Sumner Spartans April 13 with the doubles teams carrying the load. The match marked the first time this season coach Billy Jacobsen was able to put his top eight players on the courts.

The first doubles team of Alise and Emily McCoy picked up a victory over Taylor Henken and Kayla Anderson 6-4, 6-1 while the second doubles team of Jessica Roller and Katie Barrie had an easier time with Brittany Skirm and Jasmine Babcock 6-0, 6-2.

Picking up the third win for the Panthers was the team of Kelsey Kober and Molly Miculinich who dropped their first set to Kaily Bieber and Taylor Friermuth but bounced back to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Singles players had a tougher time as Ashley Reisen fell to Emily Gonsales 6-4, 7-6 and Olivia Ottinger lost to Megan Smith 6-2, 6-3.

April 14, Bonney Lake headed east for a match at Enumclaw. Though the Hornets ultimately proved too much besting Bonney Lake 3-2, the McCoy sisters pulled out a victory against Lauren Redman and Anna Nelson 6-4, 6-4. Redman and Nelson went undefeated in league play last years and were the subdistrict champions.

“They played very well and everything was working for them,” Jacobsen said of the McCoys.

In first singles, Reisen also picked up a win, beating Rachel Holly 6-3, 6-4.

It wasn’t enough, however, as Ottinger dropped her match to Alex Putman 6-2, 6-0, second doubles team of Roller and Barrie lost to Breanna Pierce and Julie Sanders 6-0 6-2 and Kober and Miculinich also fell to Gina Sanders and Bedda Johnson.

Bonney Lake rallied back Thursday afternoon, however, pulling out a 4-1 victory over Franklin Pierce.

The McCoy sisters continued their winning way, defeating Katelin Curtis and Dalina Phung 6-1, 6-1 while Barrie and Roller were able to turn it around and beat Shannon Normandi and Alexa Bayouk 6-0, 6-0 and Kober and Miculinich defeated Soreya Pao and Karli Floyd 6-1, 6-2.

In singles play, Ottinger beat Marissa McGee 7-6, 6-2 in a marathon match that lasted more than two hours, according to Jacobsen.

The only loss for the Panthers came in first singles as Reisen fell to Sarah Webster 6-2, 7-6, but Jacobsen said Reisen showed she improvement and is headed in the right direction, as Webster defeated Reisen by a larger margin earlier in the season.
