Friday and Saturday was an ill-fated one for the high school volleyball squads out of the Sumner School District.
Bonney Lake went down to defeat in the West Central District III tournament at Auburn Mountainview High and Sumner High stumbled first against Sequim Friday, losing 27-25, 25-13, 25-23, then Interlake Saturday.
Both will be on the outside of the state tournament looking in for a change.
Bonney Lake was washed away by a stalwart Columbia River squad 28-26, 24-26, 25-13 and 26-24.
The next day, the Panthers took a beat down from a Peninsula High bunch that Bonney Lake had stuffed twice handily during the regular season. The Seahawks sent the Panthers home following a drama-packed match that featured scores of 23-25, 25-23, 25-18, 19-25 before Bonney Lake was ousted 15-13.
As for the exceedingly young Spartan squad, which is no stranger to the state tournament under the tutelage of veteran head coach Mike Fitzpatrick, youth was not served.
“We will be back next year, but we just didn’t have quite enough to hang in there with Sequim and despite going to a fifth game with the Saints, we just couldn’t quite get it done,” said Fitzpatrick, whose crew raised a few eyebrows by earning a postseason berth after a herky-jerky start to its 2010 campaign.
Interlake bumped Sumner out of the running Saturday in the double elimination tourney trimming them 27-25, 25-20, 25-18, 17-25 and 15-11.
