The Sumner Spartans roundball girls picked up a big league win Friday at home, its second South Puget Sound League 3A victory of the season.

Sumner played a strong game, beating Franklin Pierce 52-45 with balanced scoring and tenacious defense.

The Spartans outscored the Cardinals three of the four quarters. Sumner took a 14-10 lead after the first frame and a 27-20 lead into the locker room at the half.

“I was very impressed with our defense,” coach Callie Birklid said. “Especially Angie (Wagar-Sanchez). They put a triangle-two (defense) on Angie and Erika Olsen. I told Angie to focus on defense and I have to hand it to her, she did a good job.”

The Cardinals held Wagar-Sanchez to six point for the night, well under her nearly 12-point average.

Olsen scored 16, but nine were from the line.

“They started fouling our best free-throw shooter,” Birklid said.

The coach said another key to the win was Tye Lubking hitting 12 points for the night.

The Spartans traveled to Lakes Jan. 6 and lost 60-55.

Olsen scored 15, Delany 13 and Wagar-Sanchez 10.

Sumner was scheduled to host White River Tuesday. Scores were not available.

The Spartans travel to district rival Bonney Lake for a 7 p.m. game Friday.
