Spartans score first victory of season

The Sumner High boys won one basketball game and lost one during the holiday break and the team is set to get back into the South Puget Sound League 3A basketball action this week.

The Spartans hosted Lakes Tuesday. Scores were not available.

Sumner will go on the road Friday for a 7 p.m. game at Franklin Pierce.

The Spartans picked up their first win of the season Dec. 31 at home beating Olympia 49-45 in a nonleague game.

Olympia took the lead at the end of the first period 15-14, but the Spartans went into the locker room at the half leading 26-23.

Sumner outscored Olympia 11-9 in the third. The Spartans added 12 in the fourth and Olympia hit for 13, but Sumner came away with the victory.

The leading scorer for Sumner was Jordan Bone with 12 points.

Sumner lost its first game over the break, 59-53 to Sequim on Dec. 30 at home, also a nonleague event.

Mike Murphy led the way for the Spartans with 15 points and Bone knocked down 13.
