Enumclaw High senior Caitlin Plese signed a national letter-of-intent to play soccer at Portland State University.

Plese, a first-team goalkeeper and South Puget Sound League 3A Defensive MVP, said she also entertained offers from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, Western Washington University and Seattle Pacific University, but settled on the Vikings because of the criminal justice program PSU offers.

The Portland State soccer program signed five players, four from the Portland-Metro area. Plese is one of two goalkeepers to commit. The class also features one player with FIFA World Cup experience.

“I am very proud of this recruiting class,” coach Laura Schott said. “Each individual adds something different and important to our 2011 team.”

Plese was the lone out-of-state signee.

“Caitlin is a solid goalkeeper with great presence,” Schott said. “Initially, her presence and demeanor in goal stood out. In addition to her leadership from the back, she is very strong and can hold a lot of shots other keepers cannot.”

Plese played eight years with Washington Premiere FC and is a three-year member of Washington Olympic Development Program.

At Enumclaw High, Plese, a captain this season, was a four-time letter winner and was named first-team all-conference three times. In addition to conference MVP honors, she was twice named the Hornets’ MVP. She was also a member of the team’s 2008 team, which made the school’s first state tournament appearance.

The daughter of Mike and Kim Please, she is a Running Start student who is scheduled to receive her associate’s degree from Green River Community College in June.

PSU finished 2010 with a 9-10-1 overall record and finished second in the Big Sky Conference (5-2-0). The team scored 31 goals and only surrendered five goals in Big Sky play.
