Sumner’s Thorton wins tournament

Brian Thornton of Sumner closed out with a 6-under par 66 to win the 83rd Washington Open Invitational at Meridian Valley Country Club in Kent.

Thorton, a golf teacher at Meridian Valley, shot a 31 on the final nine holes. His three-round total of 210 was one stroke ahead of second-place Tom Sovay.

Future Spartan boys basketball tryouts

Coaches Shane Patrick and Mark Avey are looking for boys entering grades 5 through 7 in the 2009-10 school year to participate in a competitive basketball program.

Boys interested in becoming future players at Sumner High can try out from 3 to 5 p.m. at the high school gymnasium. Patrick said they will begin competing in a summer league.

Cheerleading camp set for summer

Coach Tiana Nelson and the Bonney Lake High cheerleaders will conduct a camp Aug. 25-27 at the high school gymnasium.

Participants will learn dances, cheers, chants, kicks, jumps, voice techniques and basic movement of cheer. Nelson has attended several cheer coach camps and clinics, and is also a certified member of the Washington State Cheer Coaches Association. She is also certified with the National Cheerleaders Association.

Sessions for grades kindergarten through second is 9 to 10:30 a.m.; grades 3 through 8 from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $65 for grades 3 through 8 and $35 for kindergarten through second.

All-star baseball game Monday

The South Puget Sound League 3A senior all-stars will complete against seniors from the Seamount League and Western Cascade Conference Monday at Auburn Mountainview High.

The SPSL team plays the Seamount all-stars at 4 p.m. and face the WCC at 7 p.m.

Cost is $3 at the gate.

Wolverines host

barbecue Saturday

Wolverines Junior Football and Cheer is hosting a barbecue and registration event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Buckley community hall. This is an opportunity for players to meet the coaches and learn more about the Wolverine program.

Football players from ages 7 to 14 are divided into five teams by age and weight. Full pads and uniforms are provided under strict safety regulations. Teams are filling fast. There is a waiting list for the 89er team. Cheer has limited spaces available and is open to girls from 7 to 15 years of age; no tryouts necessary.
