Junior softball team claims district title

The Chinook Little League 13- to 14-year-old All-Star junior softball team won the District 10 championship June 28 at Brandon Park in Auburn.

The All-Stars, made up of Plateau-area players, trailed a Bonney Lake-Auburn elite team from the get-go in the opening round of competition June 27. Adding injury to insult in the second inning, Chinook’s starting pitcher Jessica Jackson took a line drive to the face that sent her to the hospital.

Mackenzie Bowers took the mound in relief and mowed down nine batters in four innings, but the Chinook All-Stars still trailed, until some seventh-inning heroics pulled them to victory.

Down four runs in the seventh, the Chinook All-Stars scored five runs, three on Kaili Chickering’s double, that pushed them to a 7-6 win.

Jackson returned to start the second game June 28 again against Bonney Lake-Auburn. This time, the Chinook All-Stars were hitting, fielding and pitching on all cylinders, winning the district title 11-5.

The team heads to the state tournament in Kirkland, Wash., to face a District 4 team at 6 p.m. July 18.
