With nine wrestlers still in the hunt for hardware and three hopeful to make the finals, the Enumclaw High wrestling team finds itself sitting at the top of the leader board after the first day of the Class 3A state tournament.

Two-time defending state champion Enumclaw closed out Friday’s competition at the Tacoma Dome with 71 points for the top spot, but was followed closely by Yelm, 62.5, and North Central and White River, each with 55.

Yelm has eight wrestlers alive including a handful of finals hopefuls, while North Central and White River each have six.

Hunter File, at 125 pounds, Josh Musick, 152, and Kario Wallin, 160, are Enumclaw’s title seekers. File earned his way into Saturday’s semifinals with an 8-2 decision and a 4-minute, 32-second pin.

Musick scored a 5-4 decision and a 13-2 decision to make the semifinals, while Wallin opened with a 54-second pin and an 11-3 decision for his spot in the semifinals.

Also still in the hunt for hardware are Lucas Somera, Andrew Fox, Kyle Young, Chance Mitchell, Colton Malek and Steven Kanpp.

For White River, it could be Brandon Short, Alec Williams and Chase Myers in the finals.

Short, at 119 pounds, opened with a 2:33 pin and a 6-1 decision to earn his spot.

Williams scored a first-round bye at 140 pounds and then pinned his second-round opponent in 4:18 for a shot at making Saturday night’s title round.

At 215 pounds, Myers picked up a 1:44 pin to start and a 9-2 decision to move into the semifinal round.

Still alive and working toward a medal are Richard Geddes, Robert Kautzman and Kyle Rodarte.
