Sumner falls to Lakes in league play

Sumner High outhit the visiting Lakes Lancers 9-5 March 31, but was unable to score enough runs and fell 4-2 in South Puget Sound League 3A play.

Both teams battled to a scoreless tie after four innings, until Lakes scored four runs in the top of the fifth.

Sumner starting pitcher Jordan Schliesman gave up four hits, struck out seven and walked one.

With one out in the fifth and trailing 3-0, Sumner coach John Welker called in left-hander Tanner Walker to take the mound in relief.

Lakes added another in the inning for a four-run advantage.

Sumner managed to get on the board when Kurt Swalander singled and moved to second on Schliesman’s sacrifice bunt.

With Matt DeGoede up to bat, Swalander stole third. DeGoede grounded out to third.

Evan Carl brought home Swalander with a single with two outs.

The Spartans scored another run in the sixth on Alex Sloan’s solo homer. Sloan led Sumner with two hits.

Schliesman suffered the loss for the Spartans.

Brad Falk and Sloan each homered for the Spartans in a 7-4 win over the Auburn Mountainview Lions March 30 in Auburn.

Sumner jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second. The Lions took a 3-2 lead in the third before the Spartans tied the scored in the fifth.

The Spartans broke the deadlock with a three-run sixth inning and added an insurance run in the seventh.

Sumner finished the game with nine hits as Evan Carl collected three hits and an RBI.

Casey Edwards also had an RBI single.

Walker gave up five hits and fanned eight batters in the win.

Sumner will continue league play by hosting White River today, Wednesday, and traveling to Bonney Lake Friday.
