Sumner girls tennis doubles up on victories

The Sumner Spartans pulled of a 3-2 nonleague win over Puyallup Thursday thanks to its No. 3 doubles team of Kally Bieber and Taylor Friermuth.

The Sumner Spartans pulled of a 3-2 nonleague win over Puyallup Thursday thanks to its No. 3 doubles team of Kally Bieber and Taylor Friermuth.

The Sumner High duo met an equally talented Viking group. The Spartans took the first set 6-4, but Puyallup battled to win the second set after a 7-6 tiebreaker.

“The girls came back to win the third set 6-4 to get us a big win over a good 4A school,” coach Chris Heacox noted.

The Spartans also got victories at No. 1 singles as Emily Gonzales topped Jane Cho, 6-1, 6-2, and No. 2 singles with Megan Smith winning 6-2, 6-1.

A 4-1 win over Lakes April 6 pads the Sumner High girls tennis team’s South Puget Sound League 3A record at 2-1.

With Lakes, Gonzales won her singles match 6-3, 6-0. Smith, at No. 2 singles, won 6-3, 6-2.

In the No. 1 doubles position Taylor Henken and Kyla Anderson won the first set 6-3, dropped the second 6-3, and came back to win the third 7-6 for the match.

The Spartans were scheduled to travel to Bonney Lake Tuesday and then move on to Capital Thursday before going to the South Kitsap tournament Saturday.
