The Bonney Lake varsity track team flexed its muscles in its first dual meet of the season, as both the Panther girls and boys teams emerged with victories over visiting Spanaway lake.
The BLHS boys won 76-68 and the girls won 76-70.
While the field events ran about even for both genders, the difference on the boys side could well have been the 3,200-meter run. The top four finishers were Bonney Lake harriers as Steve Brown snapped the twine first with a time of 11 minutes, 20.32 seconds and was closely followed by teammates Andrew Allen, Chris Koos and Alex Kulsa.
The Panther girls held a slight edge over the Sentinels in the 4×400 relay where Veronica Stinnett, Leslie Sumpter, Haylie Cannon and Leslie Cannon bested Spanaway Lake’s foursome by more than 15 seconds with a time of 4:29.82. Sumpter, a Panther freshman, also turned in a blue ribbon performance in the triple jump, while senior Haylie Cannon took home gold in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4 feet, 8 inches.
