In the season opener for both teams, the White River High girls defeated the host Enumclaw Hornets 52-36 Dec. 3.

Perhaps it was opening-night jitters, but both squads were ragged during the initial eight minutes. Thanks to four free throws and a hoop by Amanda Lance, White River enjoyed a slim 6-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.

A short break apparently revived the visitors, who went on an 18-2 run during the opening four minutes of the second quarter, building a lead they would never relinquish. Much of the damage came from the outside, as Kristin Sturdivan buried three 3-pointers and Maci Goethals added another. Combined with two hoops by freshman Kendall Bird and a 2-point bucket by Sturdivan, White River charged to a 24-7 advantage and never looked back.

Lance and Sturdivan shared game-high scoring honors with 14 points each. Katie Carlson led the EHS offense with nine.

Enumclaw will be looking for revenge at 7 p.m. Thursday when the boys hoop teams square off in the White River gym.
