The White River girls wrestlers competed at the 2012 Warriors Mat Time Holiday Classic  at Steilacoom High  on Saturday Dec. 23.

Sam Mitchell defeated last year’s 155 pound champion from Lakes in a 170 pound class match to take first place.  Dylan Fagan won all three matches to claim first and Kylie Norton won her final match against teammate Jamie Meagher (second place) to also finish as a champion in her division at 145 pounds.

The Norton vs. Meagher was an entertaining match. Coach Valdez pitted his coaching skills with Jamie Meagher against his assistants Jeff Meagher and Jason Jackson coaching Kylie Norton.

The referee  issued a warning to Valdez for “making the wrestlers laugh” and another for emphatically urging the ref to call stalling against Norton. At one point in the match, the referee instructed the wrestlers to “work to the middle”  the pair then did a synchronized army crawl to the center of the circle.

The match ended when the head coach uncharacteristically yelled for Meagher to “HIT A HEAD AND ARM.” Norton, instead, took the cue and executed a perfect throw to pin her opponent. Both wrestlers left the mat smiling and the assistant coaches looking very smug.

Senior Morgan Shirey finished second along with White River’s promising new heavyweight Hannah Lewandoski.

Kendra Blue took home third place and both McKinsie Shirey and Emma Walker placed fourth.
