The White River High girls kept their perfect season intact last weekend, notching a Friday night victory over Clover Park and a Saturday win against Auburn Mountainview.

Now, with the end of the regular season in sight, the Hornets will attempt to keep their record unblemished, secure a South Puget League 3A championship and maintain their status as one of the top Class 3A clubs in the state.

Through games of last week, White River sat at 11-0 in league play and 14-0 overall.

The stretch run began Tuesday night when the Hornets hosted the 5-5 Lakes Lancers (results came too late to include here) and continues Friday with a trip to Franklin Pierce. The weekend continues with a nonleague contest Saturday at Bainbridge. The final week of the season has White River at Sumner Feb. 10 and – in what could be a crucial contest for both squads – at Enumclaw Feb. 13.

Saturday night’s 61-44 victory came against an Auburn Mountainview team that had given the Hornets their biggest scare of the season. When they met in December, White River had escaped with a narrow, 47-45 win.

The second time around produced much different results, as the Hornets outscored the Lions in every quarter.

“I was real pleased with how the kids came out and performed,” coach Chris Gibson said.

The key was offensive consistency, he added, noting that his Hornets had suffered a third-quarter swoon during the first meeting with the Lions that obliterated a once-healthy lead.

Heading the offense were White River’s big three of Kendall Williams, who scored 18 points, Megan McKune, 17, and Brooke Paulson, 14. McKune has been on a tear lately, averaging 15 points in her last six contests.

“She’s just a relentless, tireless worker,” Gibson said, noting the importance of having a second inside threat to complement Williams.

For the year, the Western Washington-bound Williams is averaging 14 points per game, Paulson is averaging 12.8 and McKune 10.7. Williams is third in scoring among all SPSL 3A players, Paulson is eighth and McKune is 14th.

Friday night produced a 67-43 victory over visiting Clover Park.

Eleven players cracked the scoring column against the winless Warriors, led by McKune’s 21 points.
