Both White River High powerlifting teams – boys and girls – placed second during a mid-April meet in Shelton, Wash.

Coach Juan Garibay reported many school records were broken and personal records were set during the competition.

The boys lost by a point to defending state champion Montesano High School. A second-place tie with the host school was tipped in White River’s favor due to the team’s two individual champions, compared with none for Shelton. Sophomore Lucus Doll at 114 pounds and Stephan Dominguez, a senior at 242, broke the tie with their first-place efforts. What really made the difference was the final lift of 300 pounds in the deadlift for Doll and the 450 pound squat for Dominguez.

Seniors Brian Mitchell and Mikaela Kilcup, freshman Justyna Shilts and sophomore Gloria Rodriguez placed second; Garrett Quiles and Janel Shilts finished third; and Amedeo Gallucci, Caleb Maurseth, Julio Valdez, Tristan Knaus and Austin Ross all placed fourth.

Next up for the Hornets is the state meet May 12 at Northwest Christian High School in Lacey.
