White River put a two-game skid on hold, battled rival Enumclaw to a scoreless tie Friday and kicked off postseason play Tuesday night.

The Hornets finished the South Puget Sound League 3A campaign with a 4-2-2 record and claimed fifth place.

That put White River into a loser-out contest Tuesday against the Hazen Highlanders, the No. 5 club from the Seamount League. The winner advances to play at 5 p.m. Thursday at Highline Stadium in Burien, against the Southwest Conference’s No. 3 seed.

If White River won Tuesday night – results came too late to be included here but will be posted at www.courierherald.com – and are victorious Thursday, the team will play again Saturday. That game would begin at 1 p.m. at Highline Stadium against either Franklin Pierce, the top seed from the SPSL 3A, or Mount Rainier High, the Seamount champion.

The Hornets had tumbled from first place in the SPSL 3A with two consecutive losses, but bounced back Friday to play even with the hot Hornets from Enumclaw. The physical game ended with White River playing shorthanded, the victim of a red-card violation.

The tie game put White River goalkeeper Paul Root in the Hornet record book, as he registered his ninth shutout of the season. The previous record was eight, established a year ago by Justin Wales.

WRHS lost 3-2 May 5 to Sumner. The Hornets answered a pair of early goals with tallies by Evan Robertson and Jesse Ritz, then lost when SHS’s Martin Schmuck found the net.
