WRHS GIRLS BASKETBALL: White River loss tightens playoff race

The White River High girls made the South Puget Sound League 3A basketball race mighty interesting by falling Thursday night to Bonney Lake, but the Hornets still have the inside track on claiming another league championship.

The White River High girls made the South Puget Sound League 3A basketball race mighty interesting by falling Thursday night to Bonney Lake, but the Hornets still have the inside track on claiming another league championship.

If the Hornets take care of business in their final two games they’ll end up 14-2 and on top of the regular-season standings.

White River was slated to take the first step in its title quest Tuesday night by hosting the third-place Sumner Spartans; results came too late to include here but will be posted at www.courierherald.com. The Hornets polish off the regular season Friday by hosting Enumclaw.

The only challenger for the league’s top spot, Bonney Lake, has a Tuesday bye and takes on Sumner Friday.

If White River and Bonney Lake wind up with identical records, a playoff game would be needed to determine the SPSL 3A’s No. 1 seed into postseason play. That game would likely be slated for Tuesday on a neutral court.

Postseason begins with a crossover series against teams from the Seamont League. The SPSL 3A No. 1 will face the Seamount No. 1 Kennedy Catholic; the SPSL 3A’s No. 2 team will face Mount Rainier. Those games are for seeding purposes only as teams prepare for West Central District competition.
