Dylan Fagan’s runner-up finish at 140 pounds boosted the White River High girls wrestling team to a ninth-place finish at the 23-team Rogers High holiday tournament Dec. 19.

“Second place, that’s outstanding,” coach Joe Klein said.

Yelm won the tournament with Kelso, host Rogers and Hoquiam following behind. It was a busy day for the Lady Hornets. Klein said with more girls showing up then the 16-person bracket could handle, there was plenty of wrestling, but also a great deal of waiting.

Fagan started the day with a bye and then pinned Eshter Wilson of Rogers and Kat Bedjan of Washougal in 3 minutes, 1 second and 1:05, respectively, on her way to the final. In the title match, she was pinned by Haylie Osborn of Yelm in the first round for the title.

Mikaela Kilcup was also White River’s top finishers, earning third. She started her way through the 152-pound bracket with a 9-second pin. She dropped her next match, but came back to win three straight, all by fall, to finish third.

At 119 pounds, Samantha Lovelace finished fifth. She opened with a first-round bye and then pinned her Elma opponent in 1:52 before dropping into the consolation bracket.

Hornets Ashley Maki, Jesslyn Blue, Nicole Crain and Kammy Padgett saw a mixed bag of success and defeat on the day.

The girls are scheduled to wrestle at a tournament in Elma today, Wednesday, results were not available at press time.
