WRHS WRESTLING: Hornets look to boost league record tonight

White River High evened its South Puget Sound League 3A record Dec. 9 with a 46-21 loss to Auburn Mountainview.

White River High evened its South Puget Sound League 3A record Dec. 9 with a 46-21 loss to Auburn Mountainview.

The Hornets, 1-1 in league, are scheduled to host Clover Park at 7 tonight, Wednesday, and then head to Yelm Saturday for a dual match tournament.

The Hornets also earned a second-place finish at the Panther Classic in Bonney Lake Saturday; results can be found on C1.

Against the Lions, coach Joe Klein said his Hornets were tough.

“I don’t say very often that the score’s not indicative of our match, but it wasn’t,” he said. “We lost one match in overtime and one match by a point and we were missing (Chase) Myers; flop those and it’s a different score.”

The Hornets picked up points from pins by Brandon Short, Alec Williams and Dave Meagher.

At 125 pounds, Short pinned the Lions’ Kyle Howlett in 1 minute, 21 seconds. Williams, at 140 pounds, earned his pin at the 4:46 mark over Jeremiah Walker.

Meagher, returning to the mat for the first time following an injury, earned his 2:45 fall over Derek Sarrett at heavyweight.

At 145, Anthony Moore topped Eric English, 3-0, for White River’s three other team points.

It took three overtime periods before Auburn Mountainview’s Brandon Perry topped Nathan Lindner 11-7 at 119 pounds.

“Our goal is to improve every week,” Klein said. “We have a handful of returners and a lot of new kids.”
