The city of Enumclaw is reminding all water customers to minimize water use and to limit outside watering to every other day based on address (odd numbered addresses water on odd calendar days and even number addresses on even days). By distributing water use so demands from all users do not coincide on the same day or same time of day , the city can stretch its water resources and help avoid the high costs of securing additional sources of water or constructing new storage reservoirs.

The first polo match was played on the new Bonney Lake polo field at Kelly Farm last month. Longtime polo players Rob Petersen and Mark Daines christened the Kelley Creek Polo Grounds they have been constructing since the first of the year. The field is located off the Sumner-Buckley Highway in Bonney Lake, on property owned by Tim and Scott Corliss.

Enumclaw may be gaining a new car dealership. The city received a letter last month from a Tacoma architectural firm regarding turning the old Jayhawks building and property into a Chrysler/Plymoth/Dodge dealership. Potential owner Mark Topping, owner of South Tacoma Jeep, said the dealership is a real possibility.

The ambassadors of the Enumclaw Area Chamber of Commerce organized a welcome for the Scrapbook Corner. Sandy Meeve, the chamber’s executive director, presented a welcome plaque to Judy and Brenda, owners.

Twenty-five Years Ago

August 2, 1984

Most of western Washington is in a very critical fire situation due to a 30-day period without rain, according to Warren Warfield, assistant South Puget Sound area manager for the Department of Natural Resources. The DNR imposed “hoot owl” restrictions – a partial shut down on logging – at midnight Monday, July 30, Warfield said the restrictions would be in effect at least until Friday, August 3, at midnight. The shut down effects logging on state and private lands protected by the DNR at about the 1,500 foot elevation.

Ron Miller, head football coach at Enumclaw High School, and standout defensive back Mike Dowling will participate in the East-West All State football game on Saturday night at Everett High School Stadium. Miller, who in two years as varsity head coach at EHS has led the Hornets to two Seamount League titles and berths in the state tourney, will be an assistant coach of the East squad. Dowling, who played quarterback at EHS as well as defensive backfield for the West.

August 6, 1959

Photo: Signed, sealed and delivered: A new 10-year lease on the golf course at Recreation Park east of the city was signed this week by officials of the county-owned park, and the president of the Enumclaw Golf and Country Club. An Enumclaw fisherman, who was reported to have been lost in the Cascade Mountains east of Kanaskat over the week end, was found unharmed Monday evening by King County sheriff’s deputies and foresters of the State Department of Natural Resources. He is Arnold K. Chappat, Route 2 Box 473, Chappat formerly resided at 1258 Davis Avenue. Chappat went into the mountains on a fishing expedition about 5 a.m. Sunday morning and failed to return Sunday afternoon as expected. At 3 a.m. Monday morning his wife notified Tom Anderson of the State Department of Natural Resources that her husband was missing.

Seventy-five Years Ago

August 10, 1934

Continuing the progressive action of Enumclaw merchants, Ben Swain of Swain and Company announces that installation of an up to date meat market in his store on Cole Street. Besides the ice box for meats, a compartment for milk, butter and cream has been installed so that the customer may wait on herself if she so desires.

Work has started on the erection of the new Krain Hall located on the J.K. Shannon farm about two and one-half miles north on the Black Diamond highway.

Evelyn and Margaret Goddard, Helen O’Shea and Vivian Milliken are enjoying a camping trip at Lake Meridian this week.
