The Enumclaw Sting 16U girls’ fastpitch team won the American Fastpitch Association’s Pacific Northwest Championship tournament at Sprinker fields June 26-27. The Sting went 7-0 over the weekend due to strong pitching, tough defense and good hitting. The Sting scored 43 runs and allowed just five in the tournament.

The Bonney Lake/Sumner Mariners girls’ fastpitch team fount the formula for winning and brought home the trophy after winning the Tournament of Championship (TOC) June 16. The single-elimination tournament at Brannan Park in Auburn saw the Mariner girls win three straight to clinch the championship.

Ten Years Ago

July 7, 1999

Eleven students from Wilkeson Elementary School and the cross country team at White River High School are ready for a once-in-a-lifetime experience – literally. The two groups will help Mount Rainier National Park celebrate its centennial anniversary this month by participating in the Summit-to-Sound Relay.

Last year’s Mather Memorial Parkway construction project was recently honored as one of the best construction projects of the year by Associated Builders and Contractors of Western Washington.

July 5, 1984

The First National Bank of Enumclaw celebrated its 80th birthday last Friday. President Cy Williams and Executive Vice President Rich Martindale, displayed one of the anniversary cakes for the celebration. An open house with cake and coffee took place at each of the four First National Bank locations. The event was well attended.

The Enumclaw Lumber and Hardware Fourth-grade Pinto baseball team took first place again this year. The team is undefeated in two seasons with a 19-0 record. Members are Ari King, Coach Denny McNeill, Araina Dixon, Amy Laier, Troy Johnson, bat boy Mark Warren, Ryan McNeill, mascott Shayne McNeill, Brian Basteyns, Lavare Lawrence, Jeff Warren, Chris Gordon, Koll Farman, Jason Emerson, Amber Olson Randy Collins and Jeremy Jacobs.

Fifty Years Ago

July 9, 1959

Dr. Paul H. McKinnon this week announced his retirement from the practice of dentistry. Dr. McKinnon has practiced at the Adams and Asmundson Clinic since its construction in 1947. Prior to that time he had maintained offices in the Enumclaw National Bank building.

July 13, 1934

Construction of a $2,000,000 dam at Mud Mountain on the White River for flood control purposes has been approved by the state planning council’s flood control committee it was announced Friday.

The mill at Fairfax, formerly the Manley-Moore Lumber Co., will resume operations within the next week under the management of John Galbraith of Eatonville.

Tomorrow some four thousand girls will meet in Tacoma to attend the international Rainbow Girls convention. About 36 members of the Enumclaw assembly, accompanied by their advisor, Mrs. Z.H. Maddux, will attend.

Last Saturday Miss Elinor Ulman, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. F.G. Ulman returned from an extended visit in New York and various cities in Europe. She sailed on the Aquitania to enjoy a Mediterranean cruise for two months.

Axel Halkjar and Tommy Nielsen are spending two weeks in Westwood, California. They left Saturday evening with Carl Nielsen who returned to his home there after a week’s visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jens Nielsen.

A construction crew from the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph company is placing a toll or “long distance” circuit from Enumclaw to Greenwater. There will be no monthly charge, and the rate per call between Enumclaw and Greenwater will be fifteen cents for three minutes, station to station.
