Realizing that emergency situations regularly strike the Plateau and surrounding areas, experts are looking at ways to lessen the impact of natural disasters.

Part of that planning process is a public meeting slated for next week in downtown Buckley.

The Pierce County Department of Emergency Management will sponsor the session, which begins at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 18 in the Buckley Multipurpose Center, 811 Main St.

Jurisdictions involved in the planning effort include the city of Buckley, towns of Wilkeson and South Prairie and the White River, Carbonado and Dieringer school districts.

The process is aimed at developing a plan that contains measures to mitigate the impacts of hazards such as earthquakes, floods, severe storms, droughts, volcanoes, tsunamis and landslides.

The proposed measures cover a broad range of categories, including protecting life and property, ensuring emergency services, preserving natural resources, and increasing public preparedness for natural hazards that affect the area.

The effectiveness of the plan depends on public input and comment, so those attending the meeting should feel free to share their ideas.
