It looks like the Enumclaw School District budget will change.

The state’s projected $3.3 billion budget shortfall, and how leaders choose to handle it, is expected to have ramifications on local schools.

In August, the Enumclaw School Board approved a tight $44.5 million budget, which has seen cuts the past few years. District leaders said if state leaders in Olympia carry out proposed budget reductions, Enumclaw could potentially see a loss of $1.7 million.

Superintendent Mike Nelson and Director of Business and Operations Tim Madden prepped the school board for the potential reductions at its regular Sept. 20 meeting.

Although not a done deal, Madden said such a move would be out of the ordinary.

“It is different that we are looking at reductions in the beginning and middle of a fiscal year,” Madden said.

In other business, the board:

• accepted a $50,000 donation from the Enumclaw Schools Foundation for the full-day kindergarten program.

• announced it will dedicate the Thomas J. Poe Sr. soccer fields at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday before the Enumclaw High School girls soccer match.

• announced an Enumclaw Schools Foundation information night will be Oct. 14 at Sip City in Enumclaw. The foundation is also accepting grant applications for classroom enhancement.

• approved changes in high school graduation requirements.
