East Pierce Fire and Rescue crews responded to a major natural gas line break at 1515 Puyallup Street in Sumner. A construction crew at the site called to report the rupture of a four-inch gas line just after 8 a.m. today.

“Fire crews reported a large column of natural gas visible,” said Assistant Fire Chief Jim Jaques.

Sumner Police and Puget Sound Energy were also on scene.

According to Battalion Chief Mike Shiner, approximately 100 employees from nearby businesses were evacuated. One business, located further from the incident, was asked to move employees to the back of the facility. There were no homes in the mostly industrial area.

The leak was contained at 9:15 a.m.

Puyallup Street, which had been closed at the train tracks during operations, has been reopened.

No injuries were reported.
