All other fall high school sports practices get underway

Three days after football practice began, other fall sports begin practice for upcoming season

The six fall high school sports began practice Monday under Washington Interscholastic Activities Association rules.

At Sumner High School, the boys and girls cross county team started tryouts and practice schedule with a “midnight run” and another practice at 9 a.m. for those who didn’t attend the midnight session, under head coach Kristin Martin.

Robi Turley, the girls soccer coach, is holding two practices a day until school begins. The Spartans are practicing from 8-10 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. at Sunset Chev Stadium.

Head volleyball coach Mike Fitzpatrick held tryouts of the girls from 9 a.m. to noon in the SHS gymnasium.

Steven Anderson, the girls head golf coach, hit the High Cedars County Club driving range at 8 a.m. Boys head coach Casey Adcox had his team on the Sumner Meadows course at 5 p.m.

Boys tennis coach Chris Heacox and his players hit the courts at 10 a.m.

The girls swim and dive team began practice at 3 p.m. under new head coach Dana Powers at the SHS Pool.

At Bonney Lake, golf tryouts started 9:30 a.m. Monday under boys coach JD Rushton and girls coach Sharon Lovinger at High Cedars Golf Course near Orting.

Girls soccer tryouts began from 7-9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for the Panthers under head coach Luke Helling-Christy.

Shirley Baker, head volleyball coach, held the first tryouts from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday. Tryouts were held Tuesday and today.

The cross county team, under coach Andrew Foster, hit the ground running at 9 a.m. and the boys tennis team began tryouts at 9 a.m., also.

The Panther swim and dive team held tryouts from 4-5:30 p.m. Monday at the Sumner Pool. Friday’s practice is at Inlet Island.
