Parkers Bluff wins Friday feature at Emerald Downs

Parkers Bluff prevailed by a nose over Deal’ Em in a driving finish Friday in the $18,800 feature race for 3-year-olds and up at Emerald Downs.

With Gallyn Mitchell adding to his track record victory total, Parkers Bluff ran 6 ½ furlongs in 1:16.78 and paid $11, $5.20 and $3.20. Alan Bozell is the winning trainer and co-owner with Donel Matwiejow.

For Bozell, the victory continued a hot streak in which the trainer has compiled a 4-2-0 record in seven starts at the meet, with an average $2 win payoff of $19.20.

Parkers Bluff became the meet’s second two-time winner, and improved to 5-6-6 in 22 starts lifetime. A 5-year-old Washington-bred by Parker’s Storm Cat, Parkers Bluff earned $10,340 for the win, lifting his career bankroll to $49,477.

Deal’ Em, ridden by Rocco Bowen, dueled with the winner pretty much from the opening bell to the finish, dropping a tough decision via a head-bob. Deal’ Em, also off at 9-to-2 odds, paid $5.20 and $3.

Polish Dollar, ridden by Leslie Mawing, rallied from last to finish third and paid $2.60 to show.

Pete’s Slew, the 7-to-5 betting favorite, finished fourth and Oldtimers Vision was fifth.

NOTES: Perfectly Legal ($7.20) cruised to an 8 ½–length victory in race three to become the meet’s first two-time winner. Ridden by Jose Zunino and trained by Robbie Baze, Perfectly Legal ran 6 ½ furlongs in a meet-best 1:16.46, and now has wins of 5 and 8 ½ lengths. . .Juan Gutierrez rode two winners and has 10 wins at the meet, one back of leading rider Julien Couton who leads with 11 wins and has at least one win on six straight cards. . .Polish Dollar andBuddy Dave, tied for most wins by an active Emerald Downs horse at 14 apiece, both finished in-the-money Friday—9-year-old Polish Dollar was third in race six and 8-year-old Buddy Dave flew late to finish second in race seven. The geldings have a combined 61 placings at Emerald Downs. . .Newcomer Mike Pierce is off to a great start at Emerald Downs, finishing first and third in race four with Cacau ($7.20) and Chapo. Pierce is 2-1-1 in five starts since arriving from Turf Paradise. . .The 4 ¼-length win aboard Cacau gave apprentice Jimmy Guzman his second win in his last three mounts. . .Parker’s Storm Cat, WTBOA leading sire the last four years, sired the winners of both halves of the late daily double—Parkers Bluff in the feature and Stormin Parker ($8) in the nightcap. . .The win on Parkers Bluff was No. 1,392 for Mitchell at Emerald Downs. The 52-year-old jockey is 5-for-19 at the current meet. . .Live racing continues Saturday with a nine-race card at 2:10 p.m.
