First-year head coach Kristin Martin will have big shoes to fill this season. She takes over the Sumner girls track program from longtime head coach Louise King-Taylor, who retired.

Martin, who coached four years at 1A Mossyrock, was an assistant under King-Taylor last season.

“We have some good runners, both sprinters and distance, who should do well this season,” Martin said. “Back is our 4×400 relay team and they’re a year older.”

Comprising this year’s foursome are juniors Megan McDaniels, Ashley Sincraugh and Carson Blankenship, along with sophomore Lauren Bulzomi

McDaniels, Sincraugh and Bulzomi were part of the 4×400 team that finished seventh at state.

Also back is senior Hillary Norris, a distance runner who finished eight at state in the 800 meters last year. She will compete in all three long-distance events this season and can fill in on relay teams.

In the short-distance running events, Martin said she has several girls with process good speed. She’ll have Bulomi, sophomore Leah Engelhart, junior Jessica Vandergiessen, sophomore Angie Wagar-Sachez, junior Megan McDaniels and junior Stefani Castile.

Juniors Kaylee Holloway and Jackie Tomlin will participate in the 100 and 300 hurdles.

In the field events, Kayla Roberts will throw the shot put and discus, while Vandergiessen will complete in the long, triple and high jump. Castile could compete in the pole vault.

Norris and Roberts are the team captains.

The Spartans first meet is at home against Timberline March 17.
